What is a Community Foundation?

Check out this great video explaining how community foundations work to better the community.  There are community foundations throughout the world.  The YDCF is a member of Community Foundations of Canada.

What we do

The Yorkton & District Community Foundation (YDCF) is a not-for-profit endowment fund connecting donors to organizations and causes that benefit the community. The interest generated by the endowment fund is distributed in the form of annual grants to charities in our communities. The principal amount in the fund, consisting of donations made to YDCF, remains intact to become a lasting legacy.

YDCF became a registered charitable public foundation on March 21, 2019. It is governed by the laws and regulations applied to charities in Canada, and is recognized by and accountable to the Canada Revenue Agency.

Our registered charitable number is 771575495RR0001. Charitable receipts for income tax purposes are issued for all donations of $25 or greater.

YDCF is operated by a volunteer board of directors. A membership body representing charities and organizations in the district meets annually for further guidance and to discuss community needs. A partnership agreement with the Saskatoon Community Foundation secures expertise to maximize investment returns and to administer the fund.

YDCF is not intended to replace any existing fundraising body in the district, but seeks to augment the resources available to local charities and secure funds for the current and future needs of the community.

It is part of a worldwide movement of community foundations whose objective is to help build stronger and more vibrant communities. We are a part of Community Foundations of Canada, a network of nearly 200 community foundations from coast to coast to coast.

We play three key roles:

  • We work with charities in our communities to identify local community needs and to advocate for meaningful social change. Each community has unique experiences and challenges. Our strength is in bringing donors and charities together to address these needs;
  • We work with donors who wish to make meaningful and lasting contributions to the well-being of their community. We make charitable giving easy, flexible and effective. We work with donors and their advisers to maximize the value of charitable gifts. Our goal is to help you meet important needs in the community, fulfill the donor's charitable goals, and maximize their tax advantages;
  • We support charitable organizations that provide programs and services for the community. Gifts can support any cause that a donor can imagine. We believe in the power of individuals and organizations working together to bring about positive change in our communities. Gifts are pooled and invested and form permanent community assets. Earnings from these assets are granted back into the community each year to registered charities.

Our vision is to grow a legacy and build the future together.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of the Yorkton and district community by providing support to charitable organizations through grants made possible by responsible stewardship of endowment funds.

Our values are:

  • Transparency
  • Community focus
  • Teamwork
  • Ethical fund management
